General Information

The Eau Galle Flood Control Project with its dam, lake, recreation areas and channel improvements was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1958 as a result of repeated flooding in the Spring Valley area. The 630 acre project is located just north of Spring Valley, 50 miles east of the Twin Cities and 40 miles west of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

The large rolled-earth and rock-filled dam controls a 64-square mile drainage basin of the Eau Galle River, that flows into the Chippewa River and eventually enters the Mississippi River. The outlet structures include an uncontrolled morning glory inlet that releases water from the surface, and a vertical slide gate that releases water from the bottom.

In addition to providing downstream flood protection, the Eau Galle Flood Control Project provides numerous recreational opportunities and valuable habitat for native plants and animals.

Eau Galle Lake is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District. For inquiries and campsite or shelter reservations, please write or call:

Regional Economy

Spring Valley offers the combined advantages of a low cost, high value rural environment and close proximity to what Fortune magazine called the second best metropolitan area for business in the country.

The Minneapolis/St. Paul area is home to a concentration of Fortune 500 companies far beyond what might be expected for an area of 1.4 million people. Research and development is a major focus of both the Twin Cities universities and the private sector, making for a creative environment that supports new ideas and innovation. The area is a center for many industries, including medical devices, computers and information technology, food processing and agribusiness, plastics, automotive, and many others.

At the same time, the Twin Cities area has become a focal point for international commerce in the central United States and Canada. It is also a leading center for the arts and entertainment industry, with a full range of cultural offerings to suit anyone's preferences. This is the environment just one hour west of Spring Valley. Interstate 94 lies six miles north of the Village and offers easy access to the Twin Cities.

A key advantage of a Spring Valley location is the dramatic difference in business taxes between those prevailing in the Twin Cities area and those in Wisconsin. It is not uncommon for companies comparing locations to find workers' compensation rates in Wisconsin are half (or less) what they would pay in Minnesota. Additionally, commercial and industrial property tax rates are typically about 40% less than those in Minnesota, and rural locations typically have property valuations unaffected by metro-area inflation.

In Western Wisconsin, Spring Valley is also strategically located between the Twin Cites and the regional metro center of Eau Claire to the east; the Village is also midway between the University of Wisconsin campuses at River Falls and Menomonie. A twenty minute drive puts Spring Valley residents on either campus. Both schools have active interactions with industry and provide numerous opportunities for cooperative research, product or process-testing, part-time student workers, and full-time recruitment after graduation.

Spring Valley's historical economic base in the agricultural and forest products industries remains strong today, but local firms in other diverse industries have found Spring Valley to be a supportive local environment. Plastics, metalworking, recreation, and a range of service industries are also key segments of the local economy. These local employers find the Spring Valley area to be an excellent source of educated, adaptable, and conscientious workers as you might expect from a close-knit and supportive rural community.
